The Wright Art Foundation will host a benefit exhibition in Pennsylvania featuring 25 artists from the African diaspora. Scheduled for October 14th, this event addresses the alarming rise in maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States, particularly among Black women, who face a 2-3 times higher risk of adverse outcomes than White women.

Penn State Medicine and the Wright Art Foundation join this exhibition to spotlight the potent medium of art. “It’s True, I Was Created In You” showcases diverse artworks by African artists, capturing the exhibition’s essence.

In this collaborative endeavor, Dr. Division Chief Tonya Wright spearheaded a pioneering initiative at the institution. She focused on community engagement and research programs aimed at enhancing maternal outcomes. Through these endeavors, the department strives to make a significant impact on vulnerable mothers in Central Pennsylvania.

Consequently, the exhibition is an ode to motherhood, celebrating its essence and highlighting the pressing issue of the Black maternal health crisis. Additionally, proceeds from art sales will establish an endowment in Penn State’s Obstetrics/Gynecology Department under Dr. Richard Legro’s leadership.

The artists participating include Izere Antonie, Zwethelu Machepa, Okoyeh Emeka John, etc., who have generously lent their voices to this cause. Through their works, they empower Black women and amplify their stories. Their art becomes a beacon of awareness, guiding viewers through the complexities of maternal health issues faced by minority communities.

This initiative recognizes the power of art as a catalyst for change, enabling a crucial dialogue around maternal health. By attending this exhibition and supporting these artists, attendees actively contribute to improving maternal healthcare in their communities.

The collaboration between the Wright Art Foundation, Penn State Medicine, and these talented artists underscores the importance of collective action. The partnership empowers us to foster awareness and inspire change. Additionally, it enables a future where every mother receives deserved care and support. You can support this initiative by purchasing artworks, as all benefits will go towards the Penn State Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
