Tilga Art Prize: Submissions Open

Once again, G.A.S. Foundation has partnered with Tilga Art Prize to host the winner of the annual open call at G.A.S. for an all-expenses-paid residency.

Tilga Art Prize calls on artists aged 18 to 30, residing in Nigeria or of Nigerian descent, to submit their creative proposals. These submissions may encompass various artistic genres such as photography, painting, sculpture, illustration, or multidisciplinary arts.

ABOUT THE GRANT:

Tilga Art Prize is now accepting applications from artists between the ages of 18 and 30 working and living in Nigeria, or of Nigerian descent. Applicants are invited to submit proposals as individuals or as groups across a variety of creative disciplines that include photography, painting, sculpture, illustration or multidisciplinary arts.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A CV or Resume
  • One reference letter from tutors, artists and/or art professionals
  • A portfolio of 6 to 8 digital images of most recent artworks. Ideal in jpg files or photos of 300 dpi or higher (max of 10MB) or videos (not to exceed 5 mins). Include the title of each work with the medium and date. If not titled, please write, “untitled”. This could be captioned under each artwork or included in an attached checklist
  • A conceptual proposal to create artwork addressing any of the following social issues in Nigeria – poverty, youth unemployment or insecurity

THE AWARD:

Four artists will be selected as finalists

1st Prize winner – $4,000

2nd Prize winner – $3,000

3rd Prize winner – $2,000

4th Prize winner – $1,000

The 1st Prize winner also receives an all-expense paid residency at G.A.S. Farm House or G.A.S Lagos.

Additional benefits include: Mentorship by established artists, salons hosted by renowned Nigerian collectors and global publicity by all supporting partners.

The panel of judges for the 2024 Tilga Art Prize boasts esteemed figures from the Nigerian art scene, including the renowned multimedia artist, photographer, and writer, Victor Ehikhamenor; Adenrele Sonariwo, the visionary Founder of Rele Gallery and the Rele Arts Foundation; Moni Aisida, the Executive Director at Guest Artists Foundation; Grace Osime, a prominent African art collector and proprietor of The Graks Collection; and Jubril Enakele, the founder of Iron Capital and The Collection.

Tilga Art Fund, also referred to as Tilga Art Prize, was established by Wally Bakare with the noble aim of fostering critical thinking, amplifying artistic expression, and nurturing innovative approaches among young contemporary African artists. Now in its fifth annual iteration, the fund celebrates the contributions of 20 finalists who have showcased exceptional talent in the arts.

This initiative resonates deeply with Bakare’s longstanding dedication to empowering youth globally, complementing his Tilga Scholarships initiative. For over 14 years, Tilga Scholarships have provided financial assistance to 30 students pursuing education at public universities and private high schools in the United States.

Conversely, Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation, founded in 2019 by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA alongside a distinguished board of directors, stands as a Nigerian non-profit entity. It facilitates residency programs and public initiatives across two venues in Lagos and Ijebu. Its residencies also offers live/work spaces to multidisciplinary artists, researchers, and curators from across the globe.

Among the illustrious residents and alumni of the G.A.S. program is Tunji Adeniyi-Jones and Lynhan and Mantet Leoma Kupka. G.A.S. operates under the auspices and backing of the UK-registered charity, Yinka Shonibare Foundation (Charity No. 1183321).
