Armory Show has released the names of participating galleries. Over 225 galleries, from over 35 countries, will participate in this year’s edition and they will be presenting works of more than eight hundred artists. There are over 40 galleries making their debut at the show. The fair will take place at the Jacob Javits Center in New York from September 8 to September 10. There will be a VIP preview on September 7.
The fair has five different sections. The core ‘galleries’ section will center around the major international galleries. There is also a ‘solo’ section, which will feature intimate and one-person presentations of work by emerging, established, and historic artists. The fair’s ‘presents’ section, reserved for galleries under ten years old, will include an exhibit of new pictorial works. The show’s curated sections this year include ‘focus’ which will center marginalized narratives in solo and dual-artist presentations. The ‘platform’ section forms the nucleus of the fair and it will center large-scale installations and site-specific works.
SMAC Gallery and kó Artspace will participate in the solo section at Armory Show 2023.
SMAC is a contemporary art gallery with spaces in Stellenbosch, Cape Town & Johannesburg, South Africa. It has been reported that the gallery will be presenting works – handpainted bronze and resin figures- by Mary Sibande at the Armory Show 2023. With a focus on artists from the African continent, the gallery represents a number of established and emerging South African artists as well as international artists. They have participated in international art fairs such as Arco Madrid; Artissima, Turin; 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, London; and Loop, Barcelona, amongst others.
Last year, kó presented Nigerian artists, Nnenna Okore and Ozioma Onuzulike in their debut at the fair. The Lagos-based artspace is dedicated to promoting emerging and established contemporary artists, with a focus on Nigeria’s leading artists from the modern period, across Africa and the Diaspora.

The scope of international participation among both gallerists and artists reflects the rich diversity of the city itself, a place where art professionals of all backgrounds have historically come to push boundaries and join in a global conversation.”
