Savannah African Art Museum has appointed Alisa Saye Evans-Newsome as its new director. She will oversee the museum’s mission to curate experiences showcasing progressive works from across the African continent. Evans-Newsome aims to share African history with a global audience, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with the rich cultural heritage of Africa.

The museum’s collection spans West, Central, and Eastern Africa, with a focus on the power, diversity, and spirituality embodied in African art. Their collection features ceremonial and spiritual objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. These objects are crafted from a variety of materials including wood, textiles ceramics, and metal. The pieces represent diverse and distinct cultures from across the continent. Moreover, they tell the story of evolution, its relationship with the world, and the paths that have shaped our history. The Tanzanian Collection, in particular, is significant for its contribution to paleontological studies and the understanding of human evolution.

She emphasizes, “I deeply honor and respect the people, the culture, the art, and the heritage of Africa and its descendants. The history is so rich, and I am telling it. I feel humbled and grateful to hold this position.”

Evans-Newsome’s journey within the museum began as a personal assistant to the artistic director. Over the years, her passion and dedication to African art led her to take on more responsibilities. She eventually became the museum’s artistic director after working years as an executive assistant. Reflecting on her career, she states “I’ve been in the arts since 2000, and during that time, I’ve immersed myself in the study of African cultures and art. I have a profound love for the community and the culture, and I’m grateful to help lead the museum.”
