Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize 2023 (An Art Prize For Women Artists From Ghana And Its Diaspora)
Gallery 1957 is proud to announce the third edition of our art prize dedicated to African women artists, The Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize. Named after the prominent Ghanaian Queen Mother, the prize aims to fortify Gallery 1957’s commitment to supporting and uplifting emerging and established artists across Ghana and the diaspora. The prize is open exclusively to Ghanaian women artists either living in Ghana or across its diaspora. In the future, we look forward to expanding the prize to include all African and African diaspora identifying artists.The Gallery was proud to present Priscilla Kennedy as the 2022 recipient of the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, multidisciplinary artist Elisabeth Efua Sutherland and painter Naomi Amevinya as first and second runner up respectively.
Prize: The first prize winner will receive an artist residency and exhibition at Gallery 1957, as well as GH₵40,000. Second runner up will be awarded GH₵20,000 and third runner-up will receive GH₵15,000.
Application requirements – A bio of up to 200 words telling us who you are, where you are from, where you live, where you have schooled (schooling doesn’t have to be formal or directly related to art) and a concise story of your artistic journey.- Portfolio: Up to 6 high resolution photos/videos/media links of applicant’s artworks including a full caption of the title, date, medium and measurements.
Deadline: The deadline for applications is 31st July with winners announced in September.

steirischer herbst Research Residency Fellowship 2023
Since 1968, steirischer herbst has been setting standards in contemporary art and curating. Following the launch of a research residency program in 2021, the steirischer herbst Research Residency Fellowship 2023 continues to make the festival’s archival resources accessible as part of its mission to place its history in dialogue with contemporary artistic and academic practice. The fellowship supports and encourages innovative scholarly, creative, and interdisciplinary inquiries into steirischer herbst’s practice and history.
Fellows receive a stipend of 1,500 euros plus an accommodation allowance of up to 500 euros. Travel to and from Graz for the residency is also covered. Fellows able to commute receive a commuting compensation instead. The festival collaborates with a network of institutions in the city that the fellow is introduced to throughout their stay.
Application criteria: The fellowship is open to individuals from all countries. Applicants are not required to speak German, but German-language skills will likely prove advantageous when working with the archival material. Applicants must submit a short proposal in English or German of up to 500 characters as well as a more extensive 750-word project description outlining why research in the archive benefits their work and how the festival’s history relates to their scholarly or artistic pursuits. They should also include thoughts about how the research might manifest in future projects and provide a CV with publications and links to relevant websites or digital projects.
Applications are evaluated based on how clearly the case for research in the archive is made, including how this will enhance the applicant’s practice. Applicants are encouraged to explore lesser-known facets of the festival’s history. Research that pays attention to contemporary art’s embeddedness in broad political and social contexts is given preference.

Loghaven Artist Residency
Loghaven Artist Residency’s mission is to serve artists by providing them with a transformative residency experience and continued post-residency support. The residency is located on ninety acres of woodland in Knoxville, Tennessee. Artists live in five historic log cabins that have been both rehabilitated and modernized to create an ideal setting for reflection and work, and they have access to new, purpose-built studio space. All Loghaven Fellows are awarded stipends to support the creation of new work during the residency.
Loghaven’s open call for applications runs from June 1 through July 15. Artists in the fields of visual art, dance, theater, writing, music composition, architecture, and interdisciplinary work can apply for residencies occurring in 2024 and 2025.
Loghaven is a retreat-model residency with sessions lasting between two and six weeks. All resident artists are provided a living stipend as well as travel and freight reimbursement. Both emerging and established artists are encouraged to submit applications.
Residents have access to beautiful facilities, including the 860-square-foot Visual Arts Studio with specialized equipment and the Performing Arts Studio with a sprung floor. In 2021, Loghaven was awarded the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Architecture Award recognizing excellence in contemporary architecture.

Dedalus Foundation – Senior Fellowship in Art History
The Dedalus Foundation’s Senior Fellowship program should encourage and support critical and historical studies related to painting, sculpture and allied arts from the twentieth century.
Under this program, fellowships are awarded to writers and scholars who have demonstrated their abilities through previous accomplishments and who are not currently matriculated for academic degrees. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. A jury of distinguished scholars determines the winner of the fellowship. Fellowship stipends vary according to the needs of the specific project, with a maximum of $30,000.

National Public Housing Museum – Artist as Instigator Residency
The National Public Housing Museum’s Artist as Instigator Residency leverages arts and culture to make creative public policy interventions around housing and related issues. The annual residency supports artists, activists, and cultural workers to incubate ideas and produce new work in conjunction with social justice organizing and equitable development initiatives. This is an ideal opportunity for people with a demonstrated history of socially engaged projects. Priority will be given to applicants who propose ideas that are close to or ready for the implementation phase and align with the museum’s mission and vision. The next Artist as Instigator will work with them from Fall 2023 to Summer 2024.
The National Public Housing Museum’s Artist as Instigator Residency provides support for artists, activists, and cultural workers to incubate ideas and produce new work in collaboration with the National Public Housing Museum. The selected artist receives a $10,000 honorarium and a $10,000 budget for project expenses. In addition to financial support, the National Public Housing Museum provides programming and publicity support and helps the artist make and develop connections with researchers, historians, other artists, and cultural workers, as well as community-based organizations and public audiences passionate about housing justice. The National Public Housing Museum also provides accessible exhibition space and other in-kind resources and accommodations for disability accessibility needs of artists, partners, and program participants.
The residency does not currently include live or workspace, though it may in the future. Beyond the 1-year residency, the National Public Housing Museum seeks to sustain generative and mutually beneficial relationships with Artists as Instigators and their collaborators.
