Remembering Rosemary Karuga

Kenyan artist Rosemary Karuga has made a significant impact on the African art community, particularly in the contemporary scene ; through her unique style and powerful imagery. She passed away at the age of 93 on the 9th of February 2021. Karuga is well known for her vibrant paintings that blend elements of African tradition with contemporary themes and techniques, resulting in works that are both aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking. Karuga’s technique is heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics. In creating her very personal expression, she used coloured paper scraps, newspapers, glossy magazines and packaging materials that result in elevated torn and cut paper collages.

One of the most notable aspects of Karuga’s practice is her ability to address important social and political issues through her paintings. She often explores themes such as poverty, gender inequality, and the impact of modernization on traditional ways of life in Africa.
