The 14th edition of Ireland’s International Festival of Photography and Image Culture will open on the 30th of June, 2023 in Dublin and Ireland.
This year, the PhotoIreland festival will bring celebrated artists from diverse cultural backgrounds through a series of guest-curated exhibitions by internationally established curators to Ireland’s contemporary photography. There will be newly commissioned and rarely seen works at the festival. There will also be hundreds of publications to discover at the art book fair, alongside an engaging public talks programme with a series of discursive events taking place online and in-person.

PhotoIreland Festival is supported by the Arts Council and Dublin City Council Arts Office, as well as The Digital Hub and Inspirational Arts. The Office of Public Works facilitates The Printworks, Dublin Castle to host the festival’s main exhibitions and events.
Curated by international curators Catherine E. McKinley and Renée Mussai, there will be two main exhibitions, which will be interconnected and collaboratively conceived, with artists Aida Silvestri, Atong Atem, Bernice Mulenga, Frida Orupabo, Heather Agyepong, Hélène Amouzou, Lola Flash, Mónica de Miranda, Phoebe Boswell, Silvia Rosi, Zanele Muholi, and others to be announced.
This year features the return of the festival’s summer art book fair, now renamed and relaunched as Tsundoku, as well as the establishment of a new mentorship program called Relay.
Relay, a new artist-driven and artist-focused mentorship programme, just got launched by PhotoIreland. Each year, the invited artist will participate in a mentorship and development process with new artists in response to the festival’s themes. Alice Rekab, 2023 the invited artist, is working with Irish and Ireland-based African diaspora artists selected through an open call: E The Artist (Daranijoh Sanni), Samantha Brown, and Tobi Balogun.
The Tsundoku Art Book Fair debuted in July 2011. The book fair will return to Ireland this year. The fair returns with an expanded program featuring publications from a range of Irish and international publishers, as well as individuals wanting to represent practices from all continents. Visitors will be able to interact directly with the visiting publishers, be inspired by the wide range of publications offered, and participate in publishing workshops and seminars.
