London-based photographer and filmmaker Gabriel Moses’ debut exhibition is on view at 180 Studios. The exhibition titled ‘Regina’ – a survey of Moses’ work- features around 50 photographs from his career in fashion, music, and sport, including never-before-seen images.

From his first directing role at Nike to being the youngest photographer to shoot for Dazed, Moses has gone on to collaborate with top brands and designers like Adidas, Beats by Dre, Dior, Moncler, Supreme, Apple, Burberry, Virgil Abloh and Pharrell. His photographs have appeared in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, The Face, i-D, 032c, and The New York Times.

As a self-taught photographer, Moses is drawn to black-and-white ancestral photography, identity and community. His South London roots and Nigerian heritage has been integral in shaping Moses’ aesthetic. His practice involves the manipulation of light to create deep, moody colour palettes. He works primarily and consistently with the shades of the colours yellow, red and blue. Moses employs different cultural references to create soulful and beautiful images that tell captivating stories.

The exhibition ‘Regina,’ which translates into “queen” in Latin, features 50 photographs, a vinyl release and two short films. Like his photographs, the two short films that are currently showing alongside the exhibition explores common themes through the intersections of art, family and culture. ‘Regina,’ one of the films is made up of short video clips taken from various photoshoots – some of the still images from those shoots are also hung around the gallery. Commissioned by 180 Studio, Ijó, the second film follows a group of young ballet dancers in Lagos, Nigeria.

About the exhibition’s title, Moses says, “It’s a salute to the women in my life. It was always a name that I found interesting because it has its meaning but also just sounds like the name of someone. One of my favourite artists, Potter Payper, used to talk about Regina because it was Queen Elizabeth’s middle name. When you go to Crown Court, your case is called Regina versus Gabriel. Largely it was the Latin meaning I was drawn to.”

180 Studios is a network of production and exhibition spaces that supports emerging talent and provides a platform for creative growth.

The exhibition which opened on 5 April 2023 will close on 30 April 2023.
