This week, we look at open calls for March 2023.
It’s the second week in March, and there are still a ton of opportunities for artists, art writers, researchers and educators to apply to.
Here are some open calls you should check out today.
1. National Sculpture Society – Augusta Savage Grant
National Sculpture Society is presenting a $2,500 grant to be awarded to a talented emerging sculptor who self-identifies as Black or African American. A racially diverse jury of three sculptors and/or curators, including at least two of whom are Black or African American, will review applications and select one winner.
Eligibility: Citizens or residents of the USA who self-identify as Black or African American. Works inspired by nature are preferred.
Submission materials:
- Images of five to ten works, (please submit at least two views of sculpture if the sculpture is in the round – a maximum of 30 images)
- An Artist Statement
- A brief CV summarizing your career path.
- Work may be in any media.
What you get: Selected applicant would be awarded a $2,500 grant

2. African Artists’ Foundation Writers Residency
African Artists’ Foundation presents the Mentors and Mentees of “Written by us, Not about us: Reclaiming Art Histories & Developing Critical Discourse in Northern Ireland and Nigeria”, a writer’s exchange program in collaboration with the Northern Irish Art Network (NIAN).
This project aims to address the lack of critical discourse surrounding the arts, particularly the visual arts, in Northern Ireland and Nigeria by bringing together writers, journalists, curators of each country to deliver a collaborative programme of mentoring, commissioning and advocacy work.
The mentees will provide a final writing piece as part of the project which will be included in a publication launched at Ulster Museum and African Artists’ Foundation in May/June 2023.
Writer’s Residencies – As an extension of the project with NIAN, African Artists’ Foundation presents a writers residency program. Shortlisted writers will participate in a two-week physical residency in April 2023 at the African Artists’ Foundation headquarters in Lagos. The residency will culminate in a public event in Lagos to showcase and discuss the written work.
Selection criteria:
- Writers working in any format the actively write about the arts should submit a proposal to submissions@africanartists.org
- Email subject: AAF Writer’s Residency – Your name.
- A one-page cover letter explaining why you want to participate in this residency and what you hope to gain from the experience.
- Your writers CV (3 pages maximum) with contact details for two referees.
- A writing sample of no more than 800 words.
Submission Deadline: Thursday, March 16th 2023 at midnight (WAT)
3. Museum of Arts and Design – 2023 Burke Prize
The Burke Prize is a biannual contemporary art prize for a new generation of artists working in a world of expanded media with a foundation in glass, fiber, clay, metal, or wood. Selected by a diverse and distinguished jury of curators, artists, and scholars through an open-call application process, the Burke Prize winner receives an unrestricted award of $50,000.
One Burke Prize artist will also be selected for the biannual Burke Residency at The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass. The Burke Residency artist will receive a one-month to five-week residency with all the benefits and opportunities awarded to artists selected for The Studio’s Artist-in-Residence program.
The contemporary art prize honors an artist 45 or under working in the US with a foundation in glass, fiber, clay, metal, or wood. A juried selection, the winner of the open call will receive $50,000.
For collectives who wish to apply you must choose one person to be the contact person but all members of the collective must meet the requirements of the application. See specific instructions for materials submission within the application itself. An extensive collaborative practice must be demonstrated in order to be considered for the prize.
Deadline: April 28, 2023
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents, living or working within the United States, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old and not older than 45 at the time of the application deadline.

4. Kala Art Institute – 2023–2024 Kala Fellowship Award
For over 30 years, Kala Art Institute has awarded artists time, space, and financial support for their work through the Kala Fellowship award. The Kala Art Institute Fellowship is an artist residency award for local, national, and international artists. Artists producing innovative work in mediums including printmaking, digital media, installation art, social practice, photography, and book arts are encouraged to apply. Fellowship Awards will be given based on conceptual creativity, originality and artistic excellence.
Each Fellowship Award Includes:
- Cash Award: $3,000
- Studio Residency: Up to nine months of studio residency at Kala Art Institute with 24/7 access to our communal studio spaces.
- Kala Class: One class that will provide training in a chosen area of printmaking and/or digital media.
- Exhibition: Each artist selected is included in our annual group exhibition of Fellowship artists. Public programs for artists are also possible and determined on an individual basis with each artist.
- Community: Access to a community and network of approximately 75-80 artists working at Kala, participation in Kala events, and support of Kala staff.

- Documentation of recent work: Provide 1-15 items. Allowed Media Types: Images (up to 5MB each), Video (up to 250MB each), Audio (up to 30MB each), PDFs (up to 10MB each), 3D Models, External media from YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud
