Women Photograph has announced their project grants for 2023. They have partnered with Nikon USA, MFB and the Leica Grant USA to support women & non-binary photographers. Applications open on April 15, 2023 and will close on May 15, 2023.

Women Photograph is a non-profit that was started in 2017 to elevate the voices of women* and non-binary visual journalists. They also operate an annual series of project grants, a year-long mentorship program, and an annual skills-building workshop. The grants are always open to women, non-binary, transgender, and intersex documentary photographers of any nationality. Committed to centering the voices of women and non-binary photographers of colour, they pledge more than half of their funding and opportunities to BIPOC photographers.

Women Photograph has partnered with Nikon USA and MPB to award five visual artists $5,000 grant each. These grants will be awarded to photographers working on an ongoing documentary project. The funding will go towards supporting photography projects – either new or in-progress – from selected visual journalists. The grant money can be used to cover the direct costs of reporting, photographers’ creative fees, and any other expenses supporting the production of new work.

They have also partnered with Leica USA Grant to award a $10,000 grant to a photographer focused on an ongoing documentary project. It is expected that only photographers who can demonstrate a long-term dedication to their story are eligible for this grant. Applicants are expected to submit portfolios of 20 images. This is to show that applicants have done a significant amount of work on the submitted project. The photographer must have a clear vision of the work required to complete the project. The grant will be used to support the production of new work, including the hard costs of reporting, and photographers’ creative fees, but may also partially fund community engagement programming.

There are no application fees. Applicants may apply to both the Women Photograph Project Grants and the Women Photograph + Leica Grant. Only one submission per open call is allowed and there are no restrictions on camera equipment. Grant winners will retain full ownership of all work completed.

The sponsors for this year’s project grants are: Nikon USA, Leica USA, and MPB! Women Photograph, Nikon, Leica, and MPB will request that promotional photos be used explicitly to promote the photographer, the work, and the grants.
