Nthabiseng Boledi Kekana, an exceptionally talented young artist has been announced as Makwande Art Residence’s third and youngest artist-in-residence. She is set to begin her 7-week residency in June 2023, in the South of France. The residency, founded by Nomaza Nongqunga Coupez under the Undiscovered Canvas agency, is a non-profit contemporary visual art organization that aims to foster creativity, research, and experimentation through its international residency program for emerging African female artists. The residency provides a safe and supportive space for artists to explore Mediterranean French culture, learn from art masters, and draw inspiration from a rich artistic history. The resulting artworks from this transformative experience are exhibited in France and the UK, exposing artists to new market opportunities and accelerating their growth.

Nthabiseng’s invitation to the residency follows a mentorship relationship cultivated over the past two years with Nomaza Coupez. The artist’s selection for the residency is a validation of her years of hard work, raw talent and dedication to her practice despite challenging socio-economic circumstances. Although Nthabiseng Boledi Kekana was raised by a single mother in Alexandra township. One of South Africa’s poorest townships, her artistic journey has been sustained by her deep sense of purpose. As she embarks on her first international trip, she eagerly anticipates embracing a new world and interpreting it through her unique perspective. She is particularly keen on exploring European art beyond what she learned in art school and drawing connections to its African influences.

Nthabiseng’s artistic practice revolves around exploring themes of spirituality, mythology, identity, African folktales, and the feminine image. She is heavily inspired by nature and artists like Wangechi Mutu, Alberto Giacometti, and Mmakgabo Sebidi. Nthabiseng uses various mediums, including acrylic, charcoal, pastels, and natural fibers, to express the fluidity of creation and delve into the expression of divine consciousness through human existence.

The Makwande Art Residence takes great pride in playing a pivotal role in shaping and amplifying the artistic trajectory of Nthabiseng Boledi Kekana. With her artworks already exhibited in France and owned by major collectors around the world, this opportunity holds tremendous potential for elevating her artistic practice to new heights.
