Opening September 5, 2025

Mitochondria Gallery is proud to announce the debut solo exhibition of Nigerian sculptor Ejiro Fenegal, Makers of Legacy, opening on September 5th, 2025, with a public reception from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The exhibition will be on view through October 4th, 2025.

Makers of Legacy celebrates the strength, resilience, and enduring presence of African women. Rooted in the sculptural traditions of the Urhobo people of Nigeria’s Niger Delta, Fenegal’s work bridges heritage and contemporary practice. Her monumental sculptures, cast in bonded marble and finished with vibrant polychromatic patinas, pay tribute to women across generations, honoring their labor, wisdom, and quiet perseverance.

Drawing from live muses and cultural memory, Fenegal reinterprets classical Urhobo archetypes the maiden, the mother, and the matriarch imbuing them with both personal and collective significance. The exhibition positions bonded marble not only as a material of permanence but as a metaphor for resilience, unity, and continuity across time.

“Makers of Legacy is a tribute to the women who came before, the women shaping the present, and the women whose legacies will guide the future,” says Fenegal. “Through sculpture, their stories are rendered visible, permanent, and profoundly inspiring.”

The exhibition situates Fenegal within a distinguished lineage of Urhobo sculptors while asserting her own contemporary voice, offering viewers a chance to engage with African heritage through a modern lens. Her work aligns with global conversations about cultural continuity, gender, and the transformative power of sculpture.
