The Goethe-Institut has officially opened applications for the 2026 Project Space (GPS) Grant, calling on artists in South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini to submit proposals. The programme will award seed funding of up to R100,000 to three projects, which will take place between February and November 2026 in rural and peri-urban communities.

Through this grant, the Goethe-Institut aims to strengthen artistic production beyond major cities and to deepen connections between artists and local communities. Therefore, applicants must collaborate with cultural or public spaces and design projects that engage directly with the people in those areas. Eligible proposals may include exhibitions, performances, workshops, concerts, or interdisciplinary projects across theatre, dance, film, literature, visual arts, and music.

Importantly, the GPS Grant focuses on professional cultural production rather than social development. As a result, projects framed primarily around social cohesion or development do not qualify. In addition, proposals based solely in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban will not be considered.

Applicants must demonstrate clear artistic goals, realistic planning, and confirmed partnerships with local collaborators. At the same time, they should show how their projects will create meaningful impact and sustainable connections. Moreover, the Goethe-Institut encourages submissions that build bridges between rural and urban spaces, creating a broader exchange of ideas and audiences.

An independent jury of cultural professionals will evaluate all applications. They will assess artistic quality, community relevance, and feasibility within the given timeframe. Ultimately, the selected projects will highlight the richness of cultural expression in Southern Africa while amplifying voices from regions that often receive less visibility.

The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2025 at 12:00 PM CAT.
