In a significant move to elevate artistic voices from Central Africa, Gasworks has announced an open call for its prestigious residency program.

Gasworks invites artists from Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, as well as Sao Tomé, and Principe, who have already made their mark in the art world, to apply for this opportunity. The fully funded residency, spanning eleven weeks, will take place in London from January 6 to March 24, 2025.

For years, Gasworks has dedicated itself to nurturing global artistic talent for years. Each year, the organization selects up to sixteen artists for its residency program. It is celebrated for its focus on professional development, cultural exchange, and innovative artistic experimentation. Unlike traditional residencies, Gasworks offers a unique, self-directed approach. This allows artists the freedom to explore new ideas, engage with London’s vibrant art scene. They also get to expand their professional networks without prescriptive constraints.

During the residency, artists benefit from Gasworks’ comprehensive support system, which includes administrative, pastoral, and curatorial guidance. However, the program targets self-motivated individuals ready to take charge of their creative journey. It also encourages artists to fully immerse themselves in researching and producing their work, using the residency as a springboard for new artistic endeavours.

Founded in 1994, Gasworks has established itself as a cornerstone of London’s contemporary art landscape. The organization not only provides studio space but also commissions exhibitions and oversees an internationally acclaimed residency program.

Over the past three decades, Gasworks has partnered with more than 600 artists. Many of whom have gone on to achieve international recognition. The institution’s influence extends globally fostering artistic exchanges across Africa, Asia, and South America.

The selected artist will receive:

• 24-hour access to a fully accessible private studio at Gasworks, alongside other resident artists, and a community of London-based studio holders.

• Single room accommodation in Gasworks’ Residency House: a two-story house, with three communal bathrooms and also a kitchen, shared with other resident artists.

• Economy return flights and taxi transfers from the artist’s home country to London, including one cabin and one hold luggage.

• All visa costs and support with the visa application process.

• A weekly stipend of £150 to cover living expenses in London.

• A materials budget of up to £800.

• A prepaid travel card (TFL zones 1+2) for unlimited travel within central London throughout the residency.

• An Open Studio event and presentation introducing the work and also research developed during the residency, which will take place on Saturday 15 March 2025.
