To echo the words of Chanel Reitif, the Forbes 30 under 30 curator, “no one has any idea how hard it is to be successful on this continent, especially under 30 years old.” She’s right, making it in Africa, especially in the entertainment industry, can be difficult.
For years, the West dominated the creative industry – film, music, art – but it’s so amazing to see different young African entrepreneurs in the creative industry speaking at this amazing event. As Davido said, “back in the day, before you could become a superstar, a lot would be required to not only put your music out globally and locally.” The streaming era has brought rise to more and more artists, musicians, and painters here on the continent.
We all know of the “Kulosa” challenge by Oxlade, Elsa Majimbo’s funny videos, and also Davido’s No.1 album, “Timeless” right now. These success stories show us that we have a lot of talent here in Africa, and with the right support, we can achieve great things.
So, why are summits like the Forbes 30 under 30 summit in Africa important for the continent? Well, for one, these events provide a platform for young entrepreneurs and creatives to be recognized for their efforts and collaborate with other entreprenuers.
Throughout the interviews, there’s something that has stuck; Africa is often portrayed as a scary and outdated place. During his interview, Davido recounted an experience from his time studying in Alabama, where someone asked him where he was from, and when he responded Nigeria, they asked, “Well, how did you get here?” This kind of ignorance is pervasive among many people in the West, who have little knowledge or understanding of Africa.
Thankfully, events like the Forbes 30 under 30 summit are helping to shift this narrative and showcase the brilliance, vibrance, and incredible young individuals who are putting their countries on the map. One of the most common stereotypes about Africa is that it is a place of poverty, disease, and conflict. These summits highlight a different side of Africa – one that is full of innovation, creativity, and opportunity.
It’s also important to note that events like this can inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives. Throughout the interviews, there was oa common theme among the successful young superstars: they are not afraid of their success or the place where they are right now. At first, their confidence may come across as bragging, but upon reflection, why shouldn’t they show what they have achieved and acknowledge their success? It is stories like Elsa’s and Davido’s that resonate with young Africans who dream big and are making strides in this amazing continent. When young people see their peers achieving success, it can give them the confidence to pursue their own dreams. This is particularly important in a place like Africa, where many young people are harboring a great deal of talent.
According to the United Nations, Africa has the youngest population in the world, with 60% of its population under the age of 25. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge. On the one hand, young people are the future of the continent and have the potential to drive economic growth and development. On the other hand, high levels of youth unemployment and limited access to education and training mean that many young people struggle to find their footing in the world of work.
Events like the Forbes 30 under 30 summit help to address the challenges by showcasing the potential of young Africans and providing them with the skills, knowledge, and networks they need to succeed. By investing in young people, we can help to build a brighter future for Africa. The interview, headlined ‘The Trillion Dollar Opportunity,’ featured Renuka Methil, Managing Editor of Forbes Africa and Forbes Woman Africa, and panelists Sophia Danner-Okotie, Founder of Besida; Antonio Depina, Founder & CEO of Overseas Basketball Connection, Go Zoomly & Cabo Verde Basketball League; and Nadav Ossendryver, Founder & CEO of Latest Sightings, highlighting the specific areas where these amazing founders have changed the African industry, from basketball to kaftan wear and tourism. These young entrepreneurs have managed to give a facelift to what we already have on our continent: talent and amazing landscapes, which I think is simply magical.
The Forbes 30 under 30 summit in Botswana represents what assets there are in Africa. While it is true that making it in Africa can be tough, events like this offer hope and inspiration to the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives. By supporting and investing in young people, we can help unlock their potential and build a brighter future for Africa. In Elsa Majimbo’s own words, “The thing that is in Africa is invaluable. Sooner or later, it’s going to come out.
