Evolution of Artistic Vision: Kindred Spirits Exhibition

SMO Contemporary Art has recently announced the opening of its latest exhibition, ‘Kindred Spirits’,. The exhibition features paintings and mixed media works by two accomplished Nigerian experimental artists, Tayo Olayode and Ade Odunfa. The exhibition features thirty-two works that explore the dynamic interplay between texture and form. Moreover, it also examines the effects of technology on our mental well-being, creativity, and identity.

What makes this exhibition particularly noteworthy is that it celebrates the artists’ collaboration of over 25 years. Their creativity is somewhat intertwined as they grew up in the same neighbourhood. They both graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria in 1998. It showcases their shared passion for experimenting with unconventional mediums and techniques to create dynamic pieces of art that highlight the energy and vibrancy of their African heritage.

The exhibition also serves as a reminder of how collaboration and friendship across artistic mediums can strengthen and enrich society. Olayode and Odunfa have participated in exhibitions locally and internationally. They have also worked on large-scale sculptural commissions in public areas in Lagos and Port Harcourt. The exhibition will celebrate contemporary African art, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria and highlighting the country’s position as a hub of artistic creativity and innovation.

They use unconventional techniques in their works that invite viewers to question the effects of technology on creativity and identity.
