Emmie Nume Gets A Solo Booth At Art Basel Courtesy Of Liste Art Fair Basel and Afriart Gallery

Emmie Nume, a rising Ugandan figurative artist Emmie Nume’s solo show at Art Basel 2023 was nothing short of perfection. He presents a captivating display of his unique artistic approach. The solo booth, courtesy of Liste Art Basel in collaboration with Afriart Gallery showcased Nume’s paintings and drawings at Art Basel last week. He is the first East African Artist to have a solo show and a presentation at Art Basel. His works reflect a deeply intuitive practice that transcends meticulous formalities, through the use of multimedia.

Focusing on portraiture, Nume masterfully captures the essence of emotions through spontaneous and free expression. His figures and scenes lack meticulous academic calculation, hence allowing for freedom of creation. He combines spontaneous abstraction with figurative complexities to create an intimate feeling with his subjects. The result is a visual language that speaks volumes about his uninhibited approach to art-making.

Employing charcoal, pastels, and acrylics on canvas and paper, Nume adds an element of surprise to his works. His use of collage, found objects and other media and techniques employ an aspect of spontaneity. Nume’s debut solo exhibition, titled “WHEN THOUGHTS ATTACK ME,” was held at Afriart Gallery earlier this year. This marked a significant milestone in his artistic journey.
