Cameroon’s new art hub, Bwo Gallery, is set to debut on September 2, 2023. The inaugural celebration will introduce the gallery to Central Africa’s art scene and feature an exhibition by Sesse Elangwe. Founded by Brice Yonkeu and Noelle Mukete-Elhalaby, Bwo Gallery aims to amplify contemporary African art voices through its unique platform.
The gallery’s birthplace holds significance, with personal ties to Cameroon and a nod to the country’s cultural achievements. Bwo aims to uplift the next generation of Cameroonian artists while fostering cross-cultural dialogue on a global scale. Named after the Medumba word for “beauty,” Bwo finds its home in Douala’s upscale district of Bonapriso. This dynamic location boasts accessibility and conveniences for local and international visitors alike.
Sesse Elangwe is set to present his debut solo show at Bwo on September 2nd, 2023. This is his first time presenting these artworks after going into exile due to the Anglophone crisis. The exhibition, titled “The Defiant Ones,” encapsulates the essence of contemporary Cameroonian art. Elangwe’s paintings speak of socio-cultural experiences, bridging time, space, and identity through evocative subjects.
‘The Defiant Ones’ balances strength and calmness, engaging viewers in empathetic conversations about societal norms. Using clues like a vacuum, safety jacket, or fashion statements, his artworks relate to their shared space. Moreover, he employs a personal lens that anchors art in socio-cultural realities. The artist combats racial norms by questioning structures and promoting empowerment. His art delves into personal reflections on life and identity, providing an intimate glimpse into his journey.
