Artist Spotlight: Abe Ogunlende

Abe Ogunlende is a contemporary Nigerian artist to watch out for. What stands out in Ogunlende’s work is the ease with which his subjects appear to be in his reimaginations of spaces that look to be both joyful and relaxing. Beyond his use of fun and vibrant pastel acrylic colours against dark-skinned figures, his work is a narrative that invites deeper exploration. Ogunlende’s recurring motif of polka dots and flowers, whether hand-held or in a vase, centres Black Joy, particularly from an individual point of view.

His latest body of work, “Early to the Party,” is a story about black people arriving to joy and ease, reiterating the importance of exploring both themes side by side. The 20 acrylic and pastel paintings will be presented in a solo exhibition in Paris to showcase a celebratory cause for imagination. Ogunlende is exploring the notion of time and experience from a personal perspective and playfully redefining the idea of being ‘early.’ The exhibition highlights this concept by examining prescribed ideals through imagery and simplicity, reflected in a common experience.

Inspired by personal experiences, and stories shared by others, ‘Early To The Party‘ transcends mere arrival time, and re-imagines a confident pursuit of one’s own timing. Within this context, ‘early’ acquires a metaphorical depth, symbolizing moments of bold belief, foresight, and risk-taking in the celebration of one’s unique path. The term ‘party’ becomes a playground, where experiences converge. Though rooted in the personal journey of the artist, the sentiment is universal. At its core, ‘Early to the Party‘ encourages self-belief, and emphasizes playfully the importance of seizing opportunities. This contemporary art exhibition offers a simplified and creatively vivid world, inviting viewers to engage with their personal journey.
