Affinity Gallery presents ‘Wonderland’, an exhibition that celebrates curiosity and invites viewers to see the world in a new light. This exhibition is open to art enthusiasts and the general public who are interested in exploring the realms of imagination. ‘Wonderland’ showcases a diverse range of artworks that challenge conventional perspectives and encourage viewers to embrace a sense of possibility.

The exhibition’s artwork focuses on what it means to travel the world with a curious mind. This open-minded curiosity constantly challenges the status quo at all times while seeking ways to better the world.

It highlights questions around identity, belonging, community, culture, and our shared pasts. Visitors to ‘Wonderland’ will embark on a visual voyage and explore the fascinating narratives weaved into each piece of art. The paintings and mixed-media pieces in the exhibition feature talented artists such as:

Delphine Dénéréaz, a skilled artist hailing from the picturesque south-east of France, is a master of textile design. Having earned her master’s degree from La Cambre, Brussels, in 2013, she now resides and works in the bustling city of Marseille. Dénéréaz is renowned for her innovative use of recycled textiles. She seamlessly blends traditional lirette weaving techniques with everyday symbols, logos, and scenes from ordinary life. Through her artistry, discarded fabrics like sheets, tablecloths, and curtains find new life as intricate tapestries, further embodying the essence of recycling and reimagining.

Kay Gasei, a British Zambian artist based in London, delves into the realm of narratives and myths. Through his art, he explores symbolism and recurring motifs, employing nondescript characters within abstract spaces to convey his captivating stories. Gasei’s attention to detail also creates an intimate connection with the audience, inviting them to unravel the mystery within his pieces. As viewers engage with his work, they are further drawn into a haunting and enigmatic world, where every element subtly coalesces, gradually revealing the intricate tapestry of his narratives.

Uzo Njoku, a multifaceted visual artist, weaves mesmerizing motifs into her pattern-making, elevating her creations to unparalleled heights. Her colorful paintings, depicting melanin-rich figures in diverse contexts of beauty, are a testament to her artistic prowess. Njoku’s work transcends conventional boundaries, creating a striking contrast and depth that mesmerizes the viewer. With an impressive academic background, including a B.A in Studio Art from the University of Virginia and an ongoing MFA candidacy at the New York Academy of Art, Njoku has also collaborated with esteemed clients, including Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, Apple, and Harper Collins, leaving an indelible mark in the art world.

Terence Maluleke, a visionary digital artist, draws inspiration from the vibrant township of Soweto. Specializing in character design and concept art, he co-founded Tribal Universe, a visual development company, alongside his partner Simangaliso Sibaya. Their collective mission is to craft authentic African visuals and narratives that resonate globally. Additionally, Maluleke is a driving force behind Kasi Sketchbook, a program nurturing young artists in township communities and encouraging them to document their world through artistry.

Ekene Stanley Emecheta, a self-taught artist born in 1994, paints a vivid picture with his oeuvre. His unique use of colour and composition, coupled with his iconography drawn from fantasy, history, and personal experiences, defines his artistic expression. Emecheta’s distinctive approach involves intentionally removing the protagonist’s skin color, and shifting the focus to the figure’s posture and characteristics. This deliberate choice further invites viewers to engage emotionally, delving into the subject’s story and aura, transcending traditional interpretations of art.
