The ADA\ Art Gallery in Accra, Ghana, is currently showcasing an evocative solo exhibition titled “The Allegory of a Seeker,” by the talented artist Abdur Rahman Muhammad.
Running until June 2, 2024, this exhibition serves as a poignant exploration of Ghanaian societal struggles and aspirations, masterfully depicted through Muhammad’s skilled brushstrokes and vivid palette.
Muhammad, drawing from national history and contemporary observations, intertwines elements of rap lyricism to craft a visual narrative that beckons viewers into a realm of introspection. In a departure from escapism, Muhammad also confronts head-on the challenges facing Ghanaian youth, encapsulating themes of migration, disillusionment, and resilience within each canvas.
Abdur Rahman Muhammad, a Ghanaian contemporary artist based in Accra, uses oil on canvas to depict Ghanaian youth’s journey in pursuit of a better life. Abdur is also a member of the Ghanaian art collective, Artemartis.
Central to Muhammad’s oeuvre is his portrayal of the “seekers” – individuals grappling with the harsh realities of life yet steadfast in their pursuit of brighter horizons. Through expressive figurative and the adept use of oil pigments, Muhammad further imbues his characters with a palpable sense of texture and depth, symbolizing the intricate layers of their stories. Against deliberately flat backgrounds, these figures further stand as beacons of hope amidst adversity, their dreams vividly expressed through the artist’s bold colour choices.
One recurring motif in Muhammad’s work is the “Ghana Must Go” bag, a potent symbol of resilience and endurance amidst historical injustices. Originally associated with forced migration and xenophobia, the bag has evolved into a testament to human perseverance, a transformation that also echoes in Muhammad’s vibrant reinterpretations of its colours.
By infusing his paintings with rich, symbolic imagery and drawing inspiration from the storytelling prowess of musicians and poets, Muhammad also prompts viewers to reflect on their capacity for resilience and transformation. As he navigates his journey of artistic expression, Muhammad invites audiences to consider the power they possess to transcend adversity and manifest their dreams.
