This initiative culminated in a successful two-day training workshop in 2023, which brought together talented finalists in the Visual and Digital Arts categories. The workshop also introduced emerging artists to the intricacies of printmaking and encouraged them to explore innovative techniques that enhanced their existing artistic practices.

The programme aimed to broaden participants’ artistic capabilities, allowing them to incorporate printmaking into their works as well as seamlessly integrate these new pieces into their upcoming exhibition collections. Through a blend of hands-on workshops and remote classes, the finalists received a comprehensive education in printmaking techniques, the role of print in contemporary art, and also its power as a storytelling medium.

This year, the Artist Proof Studio proudly continued its collaboration with the Nyoloha Scholarship Programme, offering a unique printmaking experience for the programme’s visual art finalists. The 2024 theme, #NyolohaAfrica: Our Canvas, Our Voice, Our Future, further inspired participants to reimagine the artistic landscape of South Africa by merging traditional African storytelling with modern technological advancements.

Guided by accomplished APS graduates Misa Boshoma, Tsako Hobyani, and Khumo Ramaila, and facilitated by seasoned artists Nico Ras and Ben Mpande, the workshops equipped finalists with essential printmaking skills. Organised by Heidi Mielke, the programme ensured an engaging and educational experience for all participants.

Throughout the workshops, the finalists exhibited remarkable dedication, which also culminated in the creation of their final artworks. Tsako Hobyani, who mentored finalist Bonolo Nyatshane, expressed pride in her progress, stating,

“Bonolo approached the process with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, making the mentorship an inspiring journey. Her eagerness to experiment with different textures and patterns showcased her creativity and growth.”

The 15 finalists competed for two fully funded scholarships, each valued at R300,000, to pursue an arts degree at a South African institution of their choice. The programme concluded with a celebratory performance that artfully merged visual and performing arts, also providing a platform for the finalists to showcase their creativity and talent.

Furthermore, corporations and schools should collaborate with Artist Proof Studio by participating in educational printmaking workshops and initiatives that support emerging artists. These partnerships foster creativity, provide valuable learning experiences, and contribute to community upliftment and cultural enrichment.
