On April 5th, the African Artists’ Foundation (AAF) announced Johnson Ocheja as their new artist-in-residence.
Johnson Ocheja is a visual artist with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of the complexities of the human experience. Ocheja’s work is a testament to the beauty and resilience. Through his masterful use of color and form, he invites us to explore the nuances of community, and the human condition.
In collaboration with Alliance Française, in Lagos, Nigeria, the African Artists’ Foundation will present Johnson Ocheja’s debut solo exhibition. Curated by Princess Ayoola, “A Pilgrim’s Journey: Through the Shades of Yellow is a thought-provoking exploration of the human experience and a reminder that happiness is not just an individual pursuit. Through his use of vibrant yellows and intricate details, Ocheja invites us to explore the idea that happiness is not just a destination but a journey. Each painting depicts different shades of yellow, representing an individual’s journey towards a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Beyond the aesthetic appeal, Ocheja’s work challenges us to rethink our perceptions of happiness. Rather than viewing it as a peak to conquer, we should focus on the social relationships and shared experiences that make it tangible and rewarding. By exploring the domestic moments of his subjects, Ocheja reminds us that happiness is a shared experience that brings people together.
