Art in the City is pleased to announce “SOUGH,” the debut exhibition of Adetola Odunlami, opening on Monday, 28th October 2024. “SOUGH,” explores spaces defined by their emptiness—vacant buildings that resonate with a quiet, almost murmuring presence. In these works, silence becomes an active force, much like the subtle sound of wind through an empty room, evoking the passage of time and lingering traces of life.
Influenced by both Nigerian and international artists, including Duke Asidere, Abiodun Olaku, and George Condo, Odunlami’s work bridges cultural divides while paying homage to his artistic heritage. He credits his mother’s collection of antique Ivory art for nurturing his appreciation for the past, which he marries with his contemporary vision.
The artist presents a series of visually striking works that capture the beauty, stillness, and haunting whispers of empty buildings. Drawing from his interdisciplinary background in fashion, design, and construction, Odunlami masterfully integrates form and structure into each piece, transforming silence into an active, resonant force.
A standout quality of these paintings is the artist’s ability to convey complexity through simplicity. The minimalist forms of the structures in his work belie their intricate layers of meaning. The exhibition promises a sensory experience, encouraging visitors to reflect on how space—and its quiet murmur—can shape perception and memory.
“In emptiness, I find fullness,” Odunlami explains. “Each vacant room, each silent corridor tells a story. Through SOUGH, I invite the viewer to listen to these unspoken narratives.” With his transformative take on space and form, Adetola Odunlami’s debut promises to be a pivotal moment in contemporary Nigerian art, not just for those familiar with his journey, but for art enthusiasts eager to experience a new, compelling narrative. SOUGH will be open to the public from Monday, October 28, 2024, at Esoteric Design, located at 34 Ologun Agbaje Street, Victoria Island. The exhibition runs daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. until November 4, 2024.
