This program invites artisans from rural areas in several African countries to submit proposals for projects that celebrate and promote local artistic talent. Countries eligible for participation include Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, The Gambia, Tunisia, and Zambia.

The Colourful Cultures initiative seeks to empower local artists and artisans, particularly women and youth, by providing resources that enhance their engagement with the tourism sector. By fostering sustainable economic opportunities, the program further aims to strengthen the cultural fabric of these communities while safeguarding their unique heritage.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili highlighted the socio-economic potential of tourism in rural areas, stating,

“Tourism has the capacity to deliver significant benefits by preserving cultural heritage and creating jobs. The launch of the Tourism for Rural Development Small Grants Programme signifies our commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment.” This initiative represents a vital step towards revitalizing local economies through tourism.

Thomas Ellerbeck, Chairman of the TUI Care Foundation, reinforced the collaboration’s significance, remarking, “Our partnership with UN Tourism demonstrates a shared dedication to sustainable development in the tourism sector. By supporting local artists and artisans, we aim to preserve cultural heritage while promoting economic growth and social well-being in vulnerable communities.”

Civil society organizations and non-governmental entities can propose projects that benefit artists and artisans in the identified rural tourism destinations. Each selected project can receive grants of up to EUR 20,000, aimed at enhancing the capacity of artists to engage with the tourism economy. This support is expected to improve their visibility within the tourism sector and expand access to essential services in rural areas.

Colourful Cultures is part of the broader Tourism for Rural Development small grants program that UN Tourism initiated to leverage tourism for sustainable development. With the TUI Care Foundation as its first funding partner, this initiative also marks a significant step forward in fostering economic resilience and cultural vitality in rural African communities.

The call for applications will remain open until December 2, offering a vital opportunity for artisans and organizations to contribute to the rich artistic heritage of Africa while driving sustainable development through tourism.
