Retro Africa proudly showcased the captivating collaboration between visionary designer Tokyo James and talented artist Yusuff Aina during Tokyo James’ Autumn/Winter Collection: Expansion at Milan Fashion Week.
In a harmonious blend of talents, Tokyo James and Yusuff Aina’s partnership flourished from a shared appreciation, rooted in common experiences. James boldly explores the constraints and stereotypes faced by African artists. This compels viewers to broaden their perception of designers and creatives from the continent as well as dismantle preconceived notions.
Yusuff Aina, making his inaugural foray into the fashion world, revealed a monumental site-specific installation titled “Domain Expansion.” which is a life-size sculptural figure also from Aina’s ‘Eniyan‘ series. This recurring fictional character symbolizes the unity of humanity, embodying the mantra of resilience.
Inspired by the theme of ‘EXPANSION’ threaded through Tokyo James’ latest collection, the installation transcends physical boundaries. It delves into the transformative journey of life’s phases, transitions, and mental evolution.
Curated by Dolly Kola-Balogun, ‘Eniyan: Domain Expansion’ challenges individuals to surpass familiar spaces, ingrained lifestyles, and constrained beliefs, further urging contemplation on states of mind constrained by societal norms, political ideologies, or racial divisions.
Crafted from fibreglass, standing over 6 feet tall, and adorned in white and gold, ‘Eniyan’ captures a pivotal moment transitioning from the familiar to the unknown. This transformation is portrayed through a surrounding “Gateway” structure, also inspired by Asian Tori gates, crafted from wood and standing on a bed of granite stones.
Tokyo James and Yusuff Aina’s artistic alliance at Milan Fashion Week not only pushes the boundaries of fashion and art but also invites audiences to reflect on the limitless possibilities of human expression and creativity.
