Call for Curators at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris

The Institut français du Nigeria, in collaboration with the Cité Internationale des Arts and the French Embassy in Nigeria, is delighted to announce the launch of the 5th edition of the curatorial residency program in Paris. The program is available to and designed for junior curators and art critics, living and working in Nigeria and it will be held from October 3rd to December 27th of 2024.

Cité Internationale des Arts announces the 5th edition of curatorial residency in collaboration with Institut Français du Nigéria, Embassy of France.

During the 3-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, the program enables the recipient to develop:

  • to conduct a residency research project in Paris within the framework of the Cité internationale des arts residency centre.
  • knowledge of curatorial practices and network with the support of a curator/art critic based in Paris or France, designated to accompany the selected recipient;
  • new artistic opportunities and collaborations with artists in residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts and/or based in France and with local cultural actors.

The program covers the following expenses:

  • travel to and from Paris,
  • monthly stipends,
  • honorariums for the supporting curator based in France
  • accommodation in a live-in studio at the Cite internationale des arts.

CURATOR

CRITERIA

A committee composed of experts in their field studies the applications and selects the recipients. In addition to evaluating the candidate’s professional background, the members of the jury pay particular attention to the project’s artistic quality, the arguments explaining the added value of being welcomed and supported for a residency in Paris and in the framework of the Cité internationale des arts residency center, the work protocol envisaged, and any contacts or partnerships that have already been established locally.

The program is open to Nigeria-based candidates, aged over 23 years on January 1st of 2024, with a minimum of 5 years of professional curating (minimum of 2 exhibitions curated and 2 publications in renowned art media).

Applicants will be mainly judged on:

  • The quality of their residency research project;
  • Their ability to identify their needs and goals for this residency, as well as their interest in connecting with a designated curator based in France;
  • Their experience and background in the field;
  • Their past and current curatorial/art critic works presentation document’s clarity and design;
  • The anticipated working schedule and aim during the threemonth residency;
  • Their professional connections in France or the ones they have identified and wish to develop;
  • Their availability from October 3rd to December 27th of 2024.

HOW TO APPLY

1) Make sure you have all the required documents

  • A file presenting one or more recent projects representative of your curatorial/art critic work (5 to 20 pages)
  • A Resume presenting your academic and professional background, your contact and postal address (maximum 4 pages)
  • A statement explaining the research angles that you want to develop during your art residency (maximum 2 pages)
  • A residency brief with a list of artists, experts or cultural institutions with whom you wish to collaborate (maximum 1 page)
  • One of the following files: a text (1 page), video (3 min) explaining your curatorial approach. OR a video link representative of your work. OR a letter of recommendation supporting your curatorial project at Cité Internationale des Arts. OR an Internet link of your conferences or symposia.

2) Fill out the form HERE before the 25th of February, 2024.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked for an interview the week of the 4th of March, 2024.
