The exhibition is a testament to Olulode‘s unique approach, as she encapsulates the near-universal experience of falling in love through a sequence of immersive artworks. The narrative unfolds like a storyboard, tracing the journey of a couple’s romance. It narrates a story of falling in love, from their initial meeting to late-night dances and intimate table gatherings. Olulode captures the essence of every moment, each painting echoing the unwavering joy she infuses into her protagonists.

Intuitively using symbolism, Sola Olulode crafts a poignant visual language that resonates with audiences. In one piece titled “In the Bubble of Your Love,” bubbles ascend around the lovers. The piece intentionally encapsulates the captivating oblivion often linked with infatuation. Another recurring motif, the sun, emanates warmth, light, and love, symbolizing their affection. Such symbolism takes on a life of its own within the immersive surroundings of the exhibition. The visitors and audiences, in turn, become infected by the mood Olulode creates.

Olulode’s artistic prowess is deeply rooted in her unique heritage and influences. Drawing inspiration from Yoruba Adire textiles, she masterfully infuses her artworks with a sense of cultural identity. Her delicate renderings of romance and Black womanhood breathe life into her canvases. With each stroke, she contributes to the liveliness and potency of the narrative. The canvas becomes a realm where tender stories unfold, inviting viewers to witness the beauty of love and identity intertwining.

Notably, Olulode’s impact extends beyond the gallery walls. Her recognition soared when her works became part of Artsy’s 2021 “Portrayals of Black Joy” campaign. This campaign showcased her art on public screens across major U.S. cities’ transit systems, further elevating her reputation as a visionary artist with a powerful message.

The exhibition, “Burning, like the Star that showed us to our love,” is a mesmerizing testament to the enchanting power of love. Olulode captures the essence of falling in love with unwavering joy through her intuitive symbolism and delicate portrayals. Her works celebrate love and weave in cultural influences, creating a tapestry of identity and tenderness on canvas. As her art continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, Sola Olulode cements her position as a remarkable British-Nigerian artist shaping the landscape of contemporary art.
