Wole Lagunju’s Artwork Acquired by St. Louis Art Museum at Expo Chicago Alongside Two Other Artists

The Northern Trust Purchase Prize, sponsored by a Chicago-based financial services company, allowed curators and directors from three US museums to select new artwork from the Expo Chicago fair’s Exposure section for their collections. The Seattle Art Museum chose Phahamong III by South African artist Mohau Modisakeng, the Museum of Fine Arts in St Petersburg selected Ahau Can by Mexican artist Claudia Peña Salinas, and the St Louis Art Museum acquired Irawo II by Nigerian artist Wole Lagunju. The prize was previously limited to Chicago-based institutions but was expanded to accept nationwide candidates last year.

The recently awarded “Irawo II, 2023” by Wole Lagunju showcases his mastery in a diverse range of mediums. From captivating ink portraits to vibrant depictions of Black figures, Lagunju’s art is a visual delight. Being a member of the Onanism movement in Nigeria, he brings a fresh perspective to traditional Yoruba designs, seamlessly blending them into his striking paintings. Lagunju’s has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, from Lagos to London and Washington, D.C.
