1-54 is an international contemporary art fair that showcases the work of African and African diaspora artists. The fair, which was founded in 2013, takes place annually in different cities around the world, including London, New York, and Marrakech. 1-54 Contemporary is a platform for galleries, artists, collectors, and art lovers to come together to discover and engage with the latest developments in African and African diaspora art.

The 2023 edition of the fair is taking place in Marrakech, Morocco from 9th – 12th of February. The art fair is set to be a major event for anyone interested in contemporary African art. Renowned for its cutting-edge and innovative exhibitions, which are carefully curated to provide a broad and diverse representation of African and African diaspora art, here are 5 African galleries to look out for at 1-54:

ED CROSS

Ed Cross, a London based gallery will be showing works by UK-based Nigerian artist, Abdulrazaq Awofeso at 1-54 art fair in Marrakech. The gallery that is committed to working with emerging and established artists across and beyond the African diaspora. Since its inception in 2009, the gallery has aimed to create space and bring into the spotlight voices that have historically been silenced. The gallery also seeks to promote conversation between practitioners, international audiences and its artists. Ed Cross has held exhibitions all over the world: from New York to Paris, and London to Lagos.

LA GALERIE 38

La Galerie 38 has worked to promote urban and contemporary art since its inception in Casablanca, 2010. and highlights their visions in various plastic forms. The gallery creates space for emerging talents to express themselves and push past the boundaries of creativity. La Galerie 38 represents both renowned African and international artists and will be exhibiting works by Abdoulaye Konaté, Barthélémy Toguo, Soly Cissé, and Siriki Ky at the 1-54 art fair 

FOREIGN AGENT 

Foreign Agent is a contemporary art gallery based in Lausanne, Switzerland. The gallery is committed to showcasing emerging and established contemporary talent and designers across Africas and the Diaspora. Foreign Agent will be presenting works from Nicolas Lambelet Coleman’s solo show: A Stranger in Morocco at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE

This Is Not A White Cube is an international contemporary art gallery with exhibition spaces in Luanda, Angola, and Lisbon, Portugal. The gallery has its major focus on the relevant artistic narrative around the continent of Africa and its diaspora. This Is Not A White Cube has established a representative and collaborative relationship with both international established and emerging artists. The gallery will be showing works by Mayé-Ines Tounam at the 1-54 art fair 

GALERIE CECILE FAKHOURY

Galerie Cécile Fakhoury is an international contemporary art gallery from West Africa that provides visibility to the diversity of contemporary art from Africa and the Diaspora. The gallery will be presenting works by Aboudia, Mariam Abouzid Souali, Yo-Yo Gonthier, Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux, and Rachel Marsil at the 1-54 art fair.
