These three artists integrate colour in unique ways to create a bold new vision, employing specialized techniques, as a result the works engage the observer in a continued dialogue about contemporary African art and its inescapable relationship with colour.

Having developed a unique process of creating representational art; Stephanie Weaver’s works have the unique ability of stirring up emotions. she communicates her ideas using a combination of symbolism and peculiar figures, all while demonstrating a mastery of the manipulation of colour to achieve transparent or opaque effects.

“My recent works focus on self-awareness, consciousness and identity” Adeoti Azeez explains. His works guide viewers into a more subtle experience by employing earthy colour themes and clay to create immersive sculptural works. Through his practice, Adeoti offers an Invitation to reflect and abandon the cage of perfectionism seeking to highlight the fact that imperfection is a part of the human experience.

“The themes around my exhibited works are advancement and freedom” says Oladotun, “Every day is a colorful step through which we advance further into our dreams!” Oladotun’s inspiration is evident in his disruptive approach to figuration. Using a quick application of gestural strokes to create illustrative effects, he carefully builds up layers that create vibrant figurative compositions which results in a balancing act between embodiment of colours and an expression of freedom.

Together, these three artists prove that what color can convey is boundless. Whether it’s Oladotun’s use of vibrant hues to accentuate his figures, Weaver’s captivating symbolism and characterisation or Adeoti Azeez’s process driven sculptural experimentation, the use of colour is essential in their practice and evident in their work.
